Frederick High School graduate Vikas Gowda won Group A of the qualifying rounds in the men's Olympic discus throw Monday morning in London.

The top two finishers in each of two 20-athlete groups along with the next eight best throws advanced to Tuesday's final round.

Gowda, competing for his native India, had the day's fifth-best throw overall of 65.2 meters.

But there is still room for improvement for the 6-foot-9, 308-pound 2001 Frederick graduate.

Gowda threw a personal best 66.28, an Indian national record, in April.

This is Gowda's third straight Olympic appearance but first time past the preliminary rounds.

Tuesday's final is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. EDT and can be streamed live online at www.nbcolympics.com.
