Bowie senior center turns a new page with book fair -- Gazette.Net

Children stories to adult fiction will be on display at the Bowie Senior Center this month as the facility hosts a book fair featuring nearly two dozen local authors.

The event, which is scheduled for Aug. 18 and is free and open to the public, is scheduled to bring 21 writers to the center at 14900 Health Center Drive. Books will be available for sale and authors will give readings throughout the event, which will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m., said Kathy White, the facility’s senior services manager.

“The city of Bowie is a hot spot for local authors,” said White who manages the center. “It’s a celebration of local authors.”

This year marks the first time the center has hosted a book fair, White said. The idea came from program assistant Jenny Tringali, who ran a yearlong book club in 2011, White said. Following the book club’s close late last year, Tringali presented the idea for the fair, White said.

The event is free. Attendance is expected to be roughly 150 people, however crowds as large as 200 or 300 are possible, White said.

“We’ll see how it goes this year and maybe we’ll bring it back next year, if people like it,” she said.
