The Frederick Summer Swim League season closed with a bang, as several league records were set at Saturday's All-Star Meet at Frederick High School.
Clover Hill's Ahmed Hegazi set new league records in each of his three events in the boys 15-18 age group: the 50-yard freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 50 butterfly.
“I think I did pretty good,” said Hegazi. “I also swim for a club team, and for the last two weeks we have been resting, so this was a good meet to gauge how I will do in the [club state] meet. I'm happy, overall, with how I swam. There were a few minor things, but I'm happy. The competition here is a little tougher [than last week's FSSL Division Championships], because it's people from different divisions. It's more competitive, more difficult and a lot closer finishes.”
The 100 freestyle was one of the closest races of the meet, as Hegazi, Tom Colket and Matt Colket all bested the previous record time. Tom edged his twin brother for second place by .03 seconds, a fact that was not revealed until the official results were posted nearly 30 minutes after the event finished.
“That was a little disappointing,” said Matt Colket, who swims for Holly Hills Country Club. “I had a strong day. I just came back from regional champs, I am getting ready to go out to New York this week [for a club meet], so that has really been my focus now, but it is great to come out here. I can't be unhappy what I put up today.”
Matt took first in the 50 breaststroke and finished second in the 50 freestyle and 100 individual medley. Tom secured first place in a league-record time in the 100 individual medley and also won the 50 backstroke.
Claire McIlmail starred for the Villages of Urbana Seahawks in the girls 15-18 group, claiming first in the 100 and 50 freestyle events, as well as the 50 butterfly. Jenny Grillo earned a top finish in the 100 individual medley for the Ridge Seals Swim Team. Jacy Icard took first for Clover Hill in the 50 backstroke, while sisters Emily and Katie Hicken supplied a 1-2 finish in the 50 breaststroke for Lake Linganore.
