A Prince George’s County police officer alleged to have threatened a juvenile at gunpoint in August was indicted Thursday, two days after being recognized for his heroism in a District Heights fire evacuation.

Cpl. Ricky Adey, a 10-year veteran, was alleged on Aug. 4 to have ordered a 13-year-old to his knees while holding a gun to his head in the 6900 block of Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights, according to county police Chief Mark A. Magaw and county State’s Attorney spokesman John Erzen.

Adey is charged with first- and second-degree assault and misconduct in office, his indictment states. An indictment means there is probable cause and not actual guilt.

Adey is one of two officers that county police and fire officials praised at a Wednesday press conference after he ran into a burning building of District Heights’ Rochelle Hall Apartments on Tuesday night to evacuate residents, according to county police.

He will face a suspension hearing early next week where it will be determined if he will be suspended with or without pay, Magaw said at a Friday press conference.

The juvenile, who was among a group of youth who ran from police when shots were fired Aug. 4, lodged a complaint with the police department, which was transferred to the county police’s department of internal affairs, Magaw said. No information was immediately available on why it took a year for Adey to face a grand jury and what date that grand jury was held.

Magaw said at the press conference Friday that he was disappointed to hear of the indictment, although his agency will honor the grand jury’s decision.

“Any time anything derogatory is said about our department it’s disappointing,” Magaw said. “We have a great police department with great individuals, but we are human.”

No attorney information was listed for Adey in online Prince George’s County District Court records as of Friday.
