The 2012 Maryland Futures Team was recently announced and it includes rising junior and senior baseball players from Frederick, Montgomery and Prince George's counties as well as others from across the state.
The team, selected by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches, will compete in a local tournament next month, play some Maryland colleges in August and September and then travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., in September to compete in the 2012 Perfect Game/EvoShield National Championship.
Representing Prince George's County are Riverdale Baptist pitchers Chase Brewis and Ryan Selmer, DeMatha Catholic third baseman Carl Colbert, DeMatha catcher Justin Morris and Bishop McNamara pitcher Connor Hax.
Brewis compiled a 4-0 record with three saves and 43 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings this past spring. Morris batted .304 with 18 RBI and he had already collected three college scholarship offers as a sophomore. Hax helped the Mustangs reach the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final this past spring. He also doubled in the game-winning run and struck out the side during the MSABC Junior Classic, the tryout event for the Maryland Futures squad.
Nicholas Fahs (Seneca Valley), Gus Gill (Walter Johnson), David Hesslink (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Robbie Metz (Poolesville) represent Montgomery County. Fahs reached base four times, doubled and walked twice and stole both second and third during the Junior Classic.
Gill batted .389 with 21 RBI and went 4-2 with 2.29 ERA for the Wildcats. Hesslink compiled a 4-1 record and a 1.62 earned run average for the Barons. Metz had three wins three wins and a had a 1.85 ERA for the Falcons.
The Walkersville duo of pitcher Josh Kutchey and middle infielder Brady Policelli, along with Catoctin pitcher Seth Schubert will represent Frederick County. Policelli batted .292 with 13 RBI and eight stolen bases this past spring.
