Hundreds were evacuated from a Riverdale apartment complex due to damage the facility suffered from recent storms.

About 200 people were evacuated Wednesday from the 65-unit Riverdale Towers apartment complex, located at 5315 Riverdale Park, said Rhonda Jackson, a spokeswoman for the county's Emergency Operations Center.

The evacuations occurred after the Prince George's County's Fire and EMS Department was called to the area after receiving reports of a water leak, Jackson said. Officials opted to shut down the structure, Jackson said.

“This facility will remain condemned until an official assessment is determined,” she said in a statement.

Those evacuated from the complex were taken to Bladensburg High School, where county officials from the Prince George's County's Department of Social Services and the American Red Cross will be on hand to provide assistance, Jackson said.

The evacuation comes after the region has been twice belted by severe weather.

On June 22, a microburst — a short, intense draft that travels to the ground and produces winds faster than 100 mph — knocked down power and spewed debris across a wide swath of territory in the county, but particularly hit the Bladensburg and Hyattsville area. Severe thunderstorms crashed through the region on June 29, damaging some properties and leaving thousands in the county powerless.
