The Barbara Truland-Butz Healing Garden at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, earned a Merit Award from the Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects in April.

The garden, which can be viewed from many of the hospitalís rooms, includes plants, a water feature, a zen garden, quiet seating areas and a pathway of personalized stones donated in honor of loved ones.

It opened in September 2010, outside the family lounge of the hospitalís oncology unit, to honor Truland-Butz of Darnestown who passed away from cancer in 2001.

ďThe garden is a wonderful refuge that reflects the hospitalís deep commitment to the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of people in our care,Ē Will Smith, the hospitalís Chief Development Officer, said in a statement.

It was made possible through a gift from Truland-Butzís brother and her four sons, along with employee and community donations.
