Desmond Stanback, who just completed his final year at Takoma Academy, has committed to play men's basketball at Virginia Tech, he said.
Stanback — who chose Virginia Tech over Ohio and Virginia Commonwealth — said Virginia Tech assistant coach Ramon Williams served as his primary recruiter. Stanback said when he recently received a scholarship offer, he committed.
"Right there on the spot," Stanback said.
Stanback, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, averaged 18.8 points per game in leading the Tigers to a 23-7 season, including a 13-0 conference mark.
Stanback said he plans to leave for Blacksburg in a couple weeks and sign on campus. He's set to join the ACC team after playing in the Maryland Independent School Athletic League, not often a gateway to major scholarships.
“It's not impossible,” Stanback said during the season.” You've just got to work harder than everyone else.”
