Montgomery County police collision experts are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that took place in Burtonsville near the Howard County border Saturday afternoon.

The victim, 56-year-old Laurel resident Glenn Clarence Mills II, was driving north on Maryland Route 29 when, at about 5:16 p.m., he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the roadway into a ravine over a small creek just north of the intersection with Maryland Route 198, according to police.

Mills, of the 6100 block of Windham Road, was taken to the nearby Laurel Regional Hospital, but died of his injuries that same afternoon, said Capt. Paul Starks, a Montgomery County police spokesman. Members of the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit remain uncertain why Mills veered off the roadway, Starks added.

Mills was taken to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine a cause of death and if any medical event, such as a heart attack, may have precipitated the crash, Starks said.

“That would be one of the first things that would be checked out by the medical examiners,” Starks said.

The crash was not deemed a result of Friday night’s violent storm or the resulting power outages that have affected thousands across the county.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to call the collision unit’s detectives at 301-840-2345.
