Plans are under way for a special Olney Farmers and Artists event from 1 to 5 p.m. July 4 at the MedStar Montgomery General Thrift Shop grounds, located at Prince Phillip Drive and Olney-Sandy Spring Road.

Market president and founder Janet Terry said she expects most of the usual vendors, plus there will be a different band performing every hour. If the temperature is more than 90 degrees, there will be a sprinkler for the kids.

At 4 p.m., there will be a chili cook-off in the chef's tent. Those wishing to enter may bring only one chili dish, already prepared, except for garnishing, to the market by 3 p.m.

Celebrity judges will include James Ricciuti of Ricciuti’s restaurant, Tim Dilworth, managing editor for Animal Planet’s Hillbilly Handfishin’, and Erin Simpson Lozier, food editor at Better Homes and Garden. Prizes will be awarded for the best recipes at 4:45 p.m.

For those wishing to sample the chili, three bowls and spoons will be available at a cost of $5.

“We're asking families to bring a blanket and prepare for a relaxing alternative to heavy traffic going to the beach,” said Terry. “There will be plenty of time to get to the fireworks after the market.”

For more information, go to www.olneyfarmersmarket.org or visit the information booth at the market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
