New Voltaggio restaurant opens Tuesday -- Gazette.Net

Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio and business partner Hilda Staples have opened their third restaurant in Frederick.

The diner-themed Family Meal opened for dinner service on Tuesday. The pair also own and operate VOLT restaurant in downtown Frederick and Lunchbox, along Carroll Creek.

Housed at 880 N. East St. in a former Nissan dealership built in the 1960s, the restaurant offers a "modern take on comfort food classics,” according to its owners.

The restaurant can seat 96 diners in the 3,500-square-foot space, which includes counter seating for 30 and an outdoor dining area.

Jon Barry, the general manager at Family Meal, said he expects most of the seats to be full at the restaurant at next week’s dinner service.

Family Meal will begin serving breakfast, lunch and dinner July 7. Until then, Barry said he expects to have no problem getting more than 100 diners to visit the restaurant each night. Dinner service begins at 3 p.m.

“Our first few nights have been amazing, the community response has been great,” he said. “We’re just happy to be here in Frederick.”

Barry said the restaurant — named to reinforce the tradition of family-dinner time and in reference to a term used for the staff meal eaten before or after a restaurant shift — puts a new twist on old food favorites.

The menu “is going to be some of the familiar [food that diners] are used to and some of things that are not familiar to them,” he said. “I think we are looking to fill a niche that is not here in Frederick. I think [customers] like that they can get a meal of this caliber in a setting this familiar.”

Fried green tomatoes, duck fat fries with dipping sauces and deviled eggs with smoked trout roe, bacon and chives, are just a few of the dishes featured on the menu. The fried chicken, Barry said, is his recommendation to diners.

“The fried chicken is incredible,” he said.

All items listed on the menu are less than $20. Family Meal also offers home-made ice cream.

Francee Hooper of Baltimore, who was eating dinner at VOLT on Tuesday, said she will be checking out the new restaurant.

“I would absolutely go,” she said. “Based on what I’ve seen here. We just had our first course, and it was wonderful.”
