Elizabeth DeVries Sharpless, 90, formerly of Silver Spring, died June 22, 2012.
Born Jan. 5, 1922, to the late William Slack and Mary Waters Downey DeVries, she was predeceased by Howard Franklin Sharpless, her husband of 57 years until his death in 2003.
She attended nursing school at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore before serving as a registered nurse as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in England and France during World War II. She also worked in Olney and served on the Women’s Board of Montgomery General Hospital. She was living in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the time of her death.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary S. Coburn and husband, Leif, of Pinehurst, N.C., Kate Marie Sharpless of Springfield, Va., and Susan S. Smith and husband, Arthur, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. today at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. Burial will occur in the Friends Meeting Cemetery in Sandy Spring.
