A Chillum man was killed in a Sunday morning crash in College Park.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. when a silver 2003 Dodge Neon driven by a 21-year-old man struck the driver’s side of Bernard Coatley’s white 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Coatley, 40, of the 5600 block of Parkerhouse Terrace allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way while making a left turn from Delaware Street on to U.S. Route 1, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George’s County police spokesman.

Coatley was rushed to an area hospital where he was declared dead, Johnson said.

The 21-year-old driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, as did a 32-year-old man who was a passenger in the Dodge. Another 25-year-old man riding with them was not injured, police said.

Alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash, police said. Whether charges will be filed was unclear midday Sunday, Johnson said.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said.

Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed along the busy roadway for around two hours after the crash. They have since been reopened.
