Flags in Laurel will be flown at half-staff until a native son of the city — Lance Cpl. Eugene C. Mills, III — is laid to rest.
Mills, 21, was a U.S. Marine serving in Afghanistan when he was killed Friday during combat operations in Helmand Province, according to officials with the U.S. Department of Defense.
This deployment was Millsí second, having been deployed to Afghanistan from September 2010 to March 2011. Mills was a rifleman in 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 2008.
Millsí father, Eugene Mills II, is a former Prince Georgeís County police officer and a member of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, city officials said.
City officials announced Monday that flags would be flown at half-staff in Millsí honor until his funeral. Plans for memorial services had not been announced as of Monday afternoon.
Family members could not be reached by Monday afternoon.
