The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center was awarded $1 million by the county council.
Money will be given to the museum, which seeks to highlight the culture and history of the county’s African-Americans.
The funds will help the institution raise the estimated $25 million necessary to construct a new museum in Brentwood, which will be both an education center and a gallery, said Yolanda Evans, the museum and cultural center’s public programs coordinator.
Museum officials plan to kick off the capital drive for the center with a gala in October and hope to open the facility in 2015, Evans said.
