Virginia Military Institute cadet Alex Hufnagel, of Sykesville, was a member of a team of three cadets who earned honorable mention in the International Mathematics Contest for Modeling this spring.

This was the first year VMI teams competed in the contest sponsored by the non-profit Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. About 3,697 teams from 17 countries participated.

Hufnagel graduated from the school last month with a bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
