A 22-year-old man was struck by a train in Rockville on Monday night and remains in serious condition at a local trauma center, according to Montgomery County public safety officials.
The man, who is not being identified by name, was drinking with a 21-year-old woman when, at 9:16 p.m. Monday, they decided to play a game of chicken with an oncoming train near Randolph Road and Nebel Street in Rockville, said Officer Rebecca Innocenti, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman. The two waited for a train and attempted to run across the tracks before it passed, Innocenti said.
Authorities also are not naming the female.
“The 21-year-old female successfully crossed the tracks before the train arrived and waited for the male to cross,” she said. “The male attempted to cross but was struck by the train.”
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel transported the man to the shock trauma center at Suburban Hospital with serious injuries, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a rescue service spokesman.
Graham could not discuss the full extent of the man’s injuries as of Tuesday morning.
County police are investigating the incident but have filed no charges so far, Innocenti said.
