A Damascus-based boys lacrosse team, composed of players under the age of 11, are now the Southern Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association champions in their division.
The Damascus Boys U11 White team won the championship title competing against four teams in the B division from the southern region of the state in the league’s Potomac Tournament May 20, eventually beating out a Silver Spring team 4-3 in the finals.
During the final game the team was down by two goals in the fourth quarter, but came back when the game went into overtime.
“It was great way to end the season,” said Mark Monninger, team coach. “It was very exciting [for the players].”
This wasn’t the first time the squad has competed in the tournament. They came in second last year, according to Monninger.
SMYLA includes 16 boys youth lacrosse teams and spans five counties, including St. Mary's and Fredrick counties.
