The county police department is mourning the loss of one of its own, when a four-year veteran officer was found dead inside his home Thursday morning.

Police Officer Robert M. Wiggins, Jr., assigned to the District 2 Bowie station, was off duty and at his home at the time of his death, according to county police.

Cpl. Rodney Gause, a county police spokesman, said he did not know the cause of Wiggins' death but said "it appears to be natural causes."

Gause said he did not know Wiggins' age or place of residence.

County Councilwoman Karen R. Toles (D-Dist. 7) of Suitland made a statement on Twitter regarding Wiggins' death.

"My prayers are with PGPD and the family of Officer Robert Wiggins, Jr. The entire [Prince George's County] community mourns this loss," she said.

A phone number for Wiggins' residence could not be located.
