As temperatures are getting higher, La Plata is bringing some hot tunes as the town starts its annual concert series at 7 tonight on the town hall’s west lawn.
This year’s schedule returns many of the area’s favorite local bands, military ensembles and singers who appeared last year, including the 25th Hour Band, a six-piece jazz and Motown combo, that will kick off the series Friday, and the U.S. Navy jazz band The Commodores that performs June 8.
Special events coordinator Colleen Wilson said the town added two new performers to this year’s schedule — Anthony “Swamp Dog” Clark, a blues singer who performs Sept. 14, and John Luskey Band, a Southern Maryland country band that performs Sept. 28.
Local bluegrass band Port Tobacco Pickers, whose concert last year was rained out, will perform June 15.
“Many people have made this a regular Friday night event and for good reason since it is an excellent way to spend an evening with family and friends of all ages. It is one way that we keep the small-town atmosphere of meeting and greeting our friends and neighbors,” Mayor Roy Hale said.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating.
“The concerts are a great family atmosphere and provide a free, fun thing to do on a Friday night,” Wilson said.
The town also will have its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 28 at the town hall.
