FCC soccer team signs five from Frederick County
The Frederick Community College men's soccer team announced a six-player recruiting class this week, including three Gov. Thomas Johnson High School and two Tuscarora graduates.
Midfielder Daniel Alvarado and midfielder/forward Enrique Sanchez of Thomas Johnson were All-Monocacy Valley Athletic League selections. Former Patriot Willy McKay also will play at FCC this fall. Midfielder Ritchie Reyes and forward Justin Yates were All-MVAL selections at Tuscarora. Yates played last year at Hagerstown Community College. FCC also signed goalkeeper Jesse Parsons from Covenant Life School in Gaithersburg.
The Cougars will move up to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I ranks this fall — the highest level of junior college competition.
Linganore softball claims first region title since 2008
The No. 2 seed Linganore softball team won the 3A West title with a 10-0 win over Urbana. Linganore — which defeated Eastern Technical on Tuesday in a state semifinal — also beat Seneca Valley and Rockville during its playoff run.
Urbana to hold "Meet the Coaches Night"
Urbana will hold a "Meet the Coaches Night" at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the main gym. The event will allow incoming freshmen and their parents to meet the school's fall, winter and spring coaches.
Striking out in baseball
For the first time since 2008 and the second time since 1998, Frederick County did not produce a regional baseball championship and an appearance in the state tournament following semifinal losses by Brunswick in the 1A West, Middletown in the 2A West and Thomas Johnson and Linganore in the 3A West.
The county was not completely void of a championship, however, as St. John’s Catholic captured a second straight MIAA C Conference title last week through an 11-1, five-inning victory against Chapelgate Christian Academy last week.
