DeMatha grad ends college baseball career

DeMatha Catholic graduate Brock McCallister had a strong senior season as he helped the baseball team at Francis Marion University to the NCAA Division II Southeast Region championship game. The Patriots fell just short of reaching the eight-team national tournament after an 8-4 loss to Catawba College on Sunday in Mount Olive, N.C.

McCallister, a Laurel native, started all 58 games this season for Francis Marion, which went 40-18. He hit .335 with a home run and 44 RBI. After spending two years at Frederick Community College, McCallister moved on to Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., and hit .336 (146 for 434) in two seasons.

Forestville softball falls in region-title game

The Forestville softball team reached the 1A South-title game, where it lost to Dunbar, 23-1. Forestville's playoff run also included wins over Maritime Academy and Northwestern (Baltimore).
