There was a lot of blue and white in the final round of the Class 2A boys high jump at the Maryland Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Morgan State University.

Walkersville seniors T.J. Gamble and Patrick Simons outmanned Century's Jake Stefanick as Gamble made the final first-place clearance of 6 feet, 1 inch.

With Gamble's win notching 10 points for Walkersville in the team standings, Simons took second, adding eight more to the Lions' total, putting them in first place heading into Saturday's final day of 2A competition.

“It could have come down to this last event, and if we go [second and third] we might not have had enough points,” said Gamble, who is in his first season as a high jumper. “It helps a lot that we got all we could out of it.”

Walkersville currently leads Prince George's County's Frederick Douglass by four points.

Middletown's Zachery Welch picked up his first career state title in the long jump with his leap of 23 feet, 1 1/2 inches. He edged Century's Julian Woods by half a foot for the 2A state crown.

Catoctin's Hannah Stone added another element to slew of Frederick County jumpers as she defended her 2011 1A state title in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 7 3/4 inches. The senior topped Oakdale's Adell Remsberg by nearly 2 feet. Remsberg had beaten Stone two weeks ago at the Frederick County Championship meet.

Remsberg took fifth in the triple jump on Thursday while freshman teammate Jackie McNulty took fourth. Remsberg also earned the No. 2 seed for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles, where she will have to chase down Douglass' Modesty Lorick, who had the top time in the preliminaries (14.92 seconds). Remsberg has not lost in the event yet this season.

Teammate Laura Klosterman picked up the No. 3 seed in the 100-meter dash. She will have nearly half a second to make up on Northeast's Dnique Phillip and Calvert's Markeisha Creek.

Oakdale pole vaulter Nick Riley couldn't hang with North Caroline's Jonathan Hatcher, but his clearance of 13 feet, 6 inches was good for second place.

Middletown's girls and Catoctin's boys also both earned silver medals in the 3,200-meter relay with the Cougars crossing the finish line less than two seconds after first-place Winters Mill.

The state meet continues on Friday at Morgan State University in Baltimore with Class 4A and 3A teams in action for preliminaries in the sprint events and finals in several field events, the 800 and 3,200 and the 800 relay and 3,200 relay. The state meet concludes with finals on Saturday in all four classifications.
