The Montgomery College-Germantown baseball team was eliminated from the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III World Series after a 7-1 loss to Gloucester (N.J.) County College on Sunday afternoon in Tyler, Texas.
The Gryphons had six hits — two of which came in the bottom of the ninth inning — and they got their only run of the game in the sixth. Patrick Carter walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Shawn Herndon.
MC-Germantown starting pitcher Brody Heflin (Damascus High) surrendered five earned runs on five hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings as the Gryphons (30-28) were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.
On Saturday night, MC-Germantown allowed seven unearned runs and mustered a single run on three hits in a 9-1 loss to Northern Essex Community College (Mass.).
Greg Turlik (Quince Orchard) knocked in Germantown’s lone run in the seventh inning on a triple to right field to bring home Colin Cox (Paint Branch). Northern Essex responded with a run in the seventh and five in the eighth to end the contest.
Matt Selmer (Riverdale Baptist) allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits with six walks and nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.
