La Plata Warriors designated hitter Jake Williams said he will remember the moment, “For the rest of my life.”

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the score tied at 3 in Friday’s Class 3A South Region baseball championship game, Williams hit a deep fly ball that hit the left field fence and scored the game-winning run.

As Collin Stine crossed the plate and ended the game, Stine and teammates rushed Williams at first base burying him in a Warriors pileup as the 4-3 victory was complete.

The region title is the second consecutive such title for the Warriors, last year’s 3A state runner-ups.

“I knew a curveball was coming and I was just going to try to hit it,” Williams said of the at-bat. “If he threw it out front, I was going to try to pull it and if he threw it away, I was just going to try and go with it. I just wanted to put a good bat to the ball.”

With the ball in flight, it looked like Northern would capture the third out that would have sent the game into extra innings.

However, the ball hit the fence directly above the left fielder’s glove.

“At first, I couldn’t even see the ball, so I didn’t know if it was going foul or what,” Williams said. “I’m just happy that we won, it’s a great feeling.”

On the win, Williams added finally, “I don’t even know how to explain it or put it into words, it’s the best feeling in the world.

La Plata will face J.M. Bennett of Wicomico County, the Class 3A East champions, in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover.

The meeting is a rematch of last year’s state championship game in which J.M. Bennett won 5-2 in extra innings.
