Prince George’s County Police identified the woman who died in an early Friday morning three-vehicle crash on MD 197 in Bowie that left two other people hospitalized.

Anastacia Rose Smith, 21, of the 13700 block of Gullivers Trail in Bowie was the passenger inside of a car struck from behind about 2:35 a.m. by another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of MD 197 approaching U.S. 50.

Smith and the 22-year-old female driver were stopped at a red light when they were struck, according to Cpl. Rodney Gause, a county police spokesman. Both vehicles were forced into the southbound lanes of MD 197 and a third vehicle at the stop light was also hit, Gause said.

A preliminary investigation shows that in addition to speed, alcohol may be a factor that led to the crash, Gause said, who noted that the incident is still under investigation.

Smith was pronounced dead about 5:21 a.m. at a local hospital, Gause said. The 22-year-old driver is currently in stable condition, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a county police spokesman.

Charges are pending against the 27-year-old man driving the striking vehicle, Johnson said. He is still in critical condition at a local hospital, Johnson said. The adult man driving the third vehicle struck has been treated and released, Johnson said.
