The St. Vincent Pallotti High School baseball team had three-run innings in the first and fifth and earned an 8-4 victory against Severn School on Monday in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference playoff game.

The Panthers, who won an opening-round game on Friday against Boys Latin, advanced to the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament. They will face Annapolis Area Christian at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover. AACS was a 13-3 winner against Glenelg Country School on Monday. Pallotti and AACS split their two regular season games.

In Pallotti's game against Severn, Rafi Correa had two hits and a walk and knocked in three runs for the Panthers. Pitcher Corey Dirks got the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Dirks also had a hit and two RBI. Nate Spicher struck out five and allowed one hit in two relief innings.

Matt DeFrank had an RBI double and Johnny Maloney and Dirks each had RBI singles as Pallotti took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Panthers made it 4-0 in the third when Maloney doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Correa and scored on a passed ball.

Severn, which beat Pallotti 8-7 in a regular season game on May 3, got two runs in the fourth. But Pallotti took a 7-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Correa, who advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dirks.

Severn scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Spicher's two shutout innings shut the door. Chris Edelen walked, moved to third on a single by Noah Martin and scored on a passed ball to give Pallotti an 8-4 lead in the top of the seventh.
