Five teachers from Montgomery County Catholic Schools were awarded The Golden Apple award for their excellence in teaching and commitment to Catholic education.

Ten teachers are given the award annually by the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Washington.

They were nominated by their colleagues, parents of students and students.

County winners are: Nora Facchiano, director of Extended School Programs at Saint Francis International School in Silver Spring; Maryanne Elizabeth Hellender, grade four teacher at Little Flower School in Bethesda; Kathy Luongo, resource teacher at Mary of Nazareth School in Darnestown; Patricia Deane Petruzzelli, religion teacher at St. Elizabeth School in Rockville; and Mary Schaeffer, resource teacher at St. Peter's School in Olney.

The awardees will receive a $5,000 prize along with a golden apple, pin and certificate at a dinner to be held May 17.
