An early morning collision on Interstate 495 left one person dead in Silver Spring Monday, according to Maryland State Police investigating the accident.

Initial investigation revealed two vehicles had stopped in the outer loop lanes of the Capital Beltway near the Colesville Road exit after a minor accident shortly before 2 a.m. One of the occupants of the vehicles was standing outside the cars, apparently surveying for damage when a tractor truck pulling tandem trailers struck and killed them, said a Maryland State Police trooper at the Rockville Barrack.

The victim, who will not be identified until after their family is notified, was standing in the travel portion of the roadway when they were struck, police said.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene but were unable to revive the victim, according to a state police press release.

Details regarding the exact circumstances of the fatality remained under investigation as of noon, police said. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision are being asked to contact Trooper Newill at the Rockville Barrack at 301-424-2101.
