Bicycle riders and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the 10th annual Joe’s Ride on May 19, as part of the Greater Olney Civic Association’s Olney Days celebration.

Joe Sanford was a brave and inspiring 10-year-old Olney boy who courageously battled brain cancer for three years before he died in 2002.

The event was organized to help remember Joe, as well as other children from the Olney area who have died. The event has continued to grow, and last year attracted nearly 1,000 people.

The event offers 45K, 30K, and 10K bike rides, a 5K stride, a children’s bike rodeo, along with fun, food and entertainment. A remembrance ceremony will include a balloon release.

This year’s proceeds will benefit The Children’s National Medical Center.

Joe’s Ride takes place at Oakdale Emory Church, 3425 Emory Church Road.

To learn more, visit www.joesanford.com. Registration forms are available on at www.signmeupsports.com, or at Fletcher’s Service Center, 17901 Georgia Ave.

Volunteers still are needed. To help, contact Anita Brady at akbrady@aol.com. To discuss memorializing a child, contact Betsy or Russ Sanford at 301-519-3835.
