Catoctin High School assistant girls track coach Kathy Messner-Stevens lost something at the Battlefield Blast Invitational at Boonsboro High School on Saturday. It had been hers for 17 years. Four high school girls stole it from her, but it was something she didn't mind losing.

Messner-Stevens was a part of the 1995 Catoctin girls 1,600-meter relay team that — until Saturday — held the school record.

Catoctin's Megan Demarais, Hannah Stone, Kristen Myers and Savannah Steinly combined to finish in 4 minutes, 8.85 seconds, breaking both the school record and the meet record.

“We've been working for a school record since last outdoor season,” said Stone, who also won the triple jump and high jump, and finished second in the 100 hurdles. “Personally I didn't think we would break it since it's so early in the season. I didn't know what Megan's split was. I just took it and went.”

Stone recently moved from the leadoff position to the second slot in the relay because “she likes chasing people down,” said Catoctin head coach Terri Gibbons. The move worked. Stone's long strides and tireless speed in the long sprint brought her Cougars back to the front of the race where Myers would keep them. Steinly finished by opening up a large lead she wouldn't relinquish.

“I have so much faith in them,” Stone said of her relay team. “It was a great way to finish a never-ending meet.”

The meet, which was scheduled to hold its last event at 5:30 p.m., fell hours behind, keeping athletes constantly warming up and stretching throughout the infield.

Tuscarora's Krystal Clarke needed all the delays she could get just to get to her events in time. She took sixth in the 400, but her sprint was hardly over at the finish line. She immediately ran back across the infield, changed out of her silver Nike sprint shoes and into her white and sky blue jumping shoes. She had enough time to grab a few breaths, get some last-second advice from her father, James, and then she was bounding down the runway and flying into the long jump pit.

She jumped her three preliminary rounds, sprinted to her gym bag, switched back to her sprint shoes, and prepared for her anchor leg of the 800 relay. She took the baton for the final leg from teammate Mary Mowoe half a second behind Liberty's Bre Manger, but she finished four seconds ahead of Manger, helping Tuscarora shatter the previous meet record by two seconds.

And then she was back jumping again in the finals.

“Oh my gosh,” she said when asked about her workload at the meet. “It's very hard. It feels like your legs buckle underneath you. I wasn't on the 800 relay last outdoor season, and indoor doesn't really have long jump so there is way less fatigue in indoor.”

She won the long jump with a leap of 17-4, two inches better than Oakdale's Laura Klosterman, who beat her personal record by 10 inches with her leap of 17-2.

Oakdale's Emma King broke the meet record in the pole vault by just less than 1 1/2 feet with her 11-foot clearance. Steinly also captured a meet record in the 800 (2:23.54) despite running five seconds slower than her personal record.
