I am writing in response to Rocklands Farm “Easter chick rental” idea [Poolesville farm offers Easter chick rentals,” March 28]. How much more ignorant can people possibly become in regards to the care and well-being of animals?
This farm should be ashamed of itself for putting chicks in danger for a quick money-making scheme. As someone who has been involved in animal rescue and adoption, I can say with absolute certainty that not everyone who rents these chicks will take proper care of them and they will not all make it back to the farm.
People have been marketing rabbits at Easter for years and society is now acknowledging just how big of a mistake it was. Animals are not toys! They are living creatures that need more care and education than any farm's two- week instructions guide.
Rocklands Farm should have their license revoked for stupidity and greed. I am sure they will not be posting a Gazette ad about the ratio of Easter chicks that are returned in good health with the number that were rented out.
In this age of information, we as a society should be getting smarter, not dumber.
