Keon Hill’s scream didn’t stop play, but at least it likely won’t end his season.

The point guard for Riverdale Baptist School’s boys basketball team sprained his right ankle in a collision with two Takoma Academy players on Feb. 18, and although Hill writhing in pain at midcourt didn’t stop the game, he has missed games.

The initial diagnosis called for him to be sidelined a week, which would put him on the floor for Riverdale Baptist’s senior night on Friday against National Christian.

“It would mean so much for him to be able to play in his final home game,” said Riverdale Baptist coach Lou Wilson. “And it would mean so much for the team to have his inspiration and his leadership on the court for the final game, final home game.”

Riverdale Baptist, which suffered just its third loss of the season Saturday, a one-point setback to Coolidge, also played without Hill earlier in the season. The Howard University recruit missed two games in January after injuring the same ankle.

Seedings are set: Four Prince George's County high school basketball teams have No. 1 seeds for Maryland's regional tournaments, which get under way with first-round games across the state on Friday.

The Charles H. Flowers boys and Henry A. Wise girls enter the postseason as frontrunners in the 4A South Region, which is comprised of 12 Prince George's County schools. After winning five games in the 2009-10 season, coach Billy Lanier has guided the Jaguars to a 16-4 mark this season.

The Wise girls are 20-1 and compiled a perfect 18-0 record against County 4A League competition this season, led by Eliqua Brooks (19.2 points per game) and Khadijah Gibson (16.6 ppg).

Friendly secured the top seed in the girls 3A South Region after going 17-4. Like the Flowers boys, the Patriots have surged from the bottom of the standings over the past couple seasons. Friendly was 6-15 two years ago before going 17-9 last season.

In the boys 2A South Region, Gwynn Park and Largo are on opposite ends of the bracket as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively. The County 3A/2A/1A League rivals split their two regular season games.

The top four seeds in each region earned first-round byes and will return to action in the quarterfinals, with girls games on Monday and boys games on Tuesday.

Lost in the shuffle: Friendly’s Chayla Lewis certainly stole the show during her team’s 65-63 upset of Gwynn Park on Feb. 16, producing 30 points and 17 rebounds. But if not for the play of point guard Precious Winley in the fourth quarter that come-from-behind victory may not have happened.

With her team trailing 46-43 early in the fourth quarter, Winley dribbled through the Gwynn Park fullcourt press for a layup. She then gave Friendly the lead for good at 50-48 on a 3-pointer from the right baseline.

Winley followed with a pair of 1-and-1 free throws and then a 3-point play as she once again beat the Yellow Jackets down the floor for a 55-48 lead with 5:15 left in the game. She added a double bonus free throw with 1:12 left for a 63-60 lead. Winley produced 10 fourth-quarter points after knocking down just two field goals in the first three quarters.

Wild finish: The Eleanor Roosevelt girls basketball team experienced a wild and sometimes painful ride to the end of the regular season, sandwiching a pair of losses around a pair of wins, including a season-ending loss to Parkdale.

The Raiders (13-8) opened that four-game roller coaster with a 57-48 overtime loss to third-ranked Charles H. Flowers Feb. 7. Roosevelt led 35-29 going into the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-10 in the fourth quarter and 12-3 in overtime.

Roosevelt rebounded to defeat Bladensburg, 50-41, Feb. 13 and then upset sixth-ranked Bowie, 44-39, in overtime behind an 11-5 fourth quarter and a 7-2 overtime period. Then the Raiders dropped the three-point decision to Parkdale, who forced overtime by outscoring the Raiders, 14-5, in the fourth quarter.

Roosevelt looks to get back on the winning track Friday against Northwestern in a 4A South Region first-round contest. A win would send the Raiders into Monday’s quarterfinal contest with top-seeded Henry A. Wise, which defeated the Raiders, 59-49, Dec. 19.
