Boys basketball: Clarksburg joins top 10 by Gazette staff
Clarksburg High School's boys basketball team returned to The Gazette's top 10 rankings on Tuesday and then went out and defeated Seneca Valley, 59-56.
Gary Rich had 18 points and Isaiah Battle and Josh Hardy added 11 each for the Coyotes (13-7).
Jerry McFadden scored 19 for the Screaming Eagles (12-9).
Sherwood 61, Bethesda-Chevy Chase 45
Senior Scott Bolen scored 21 points to help the ninth-ranked Warriors clinch their 15th victory of the season. B-CC led 15-8 after the first quarter, but the Warriors' defense shut down the Barons' offense in the second quarter. Sherwood (15-6) outscored B-CC 16-0 in that period.
Senior Ghedalia Gold-Pastor had 20 points for the Barons (11-10).
Springbrook 74, Albert Einstein 41
Senior center Demetric Austin scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the third-ranked Blue Devils. Josh Ogburn led the Titans (2-19) with 12 points. Springbrook improves to 17-3.
Quince Orchard 66, John F. Kennedy 60
The Kennedy Cavaliers continue to struggle without junior point guard Marcus Murray, who is out for at least the rest of the regular season with a severe ankle sprain. Myck Miller scored 25 points for QO, which improved to 5-15. Asean Townsend had 24 points for Kennedy (8-12), which lost its sixth straight since upsetting Sherwood on Jan. 20.
Winston Churchill 76, Northwood 52
Churchill officially clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 4A West Region tournament with the victory. Sam Edens led the Bulldogs (16-4) with 19 points. Sean Vanduring scored 16 to lead the Gladiators (5-16).
No. 5 Churchill concludes the regular season on Tuesday when it travels to face the 4A West Region's top seed, second-ranked Col. Zadok Magruder.
Thomas S. Wootton 62, Northwest 55
Eddie Tsao had 13 points to lead the Patriots (12-9). Ramel Davidson scored 14 for Northwest (11-9).
Gaithersburg 63, Watkins Mill 62
Mateen Etheridge scored 13 and Mamadou Doukoure added 11 to lead the Trojans (8-12). Watkins Mill, the Montgomery 3A/2A Division champ, falls to 12-9.
Rockville 55, Richard Montgomery 43
Tyron White scored 18 points to lead the Rams (9-11). Tony Sharps had 17 points for the Rockets (8-12).
Walt Whitman 57, Montgomery Blair 51
Andrew Castagnetti scored 23 points to lead the Vikings (5-15). Blair fell to 5-15 as well.
Carroll 70, Good Counsel 47
The Falcons up-and-down season continues. Days after taking one of the top teams in the region, Paul VI, to overtime before losing, Good Counsel was blown out by 13-11 Carroll.
Sophomore guard Byron Hawkins scored 14 for the Falcons (9-18).
Landon 58, St. Stephen's/St. Agnes 45
Hank Brown scored 14 points to lead the Bears. Landon senior Joe McDonald, one of the top scorers in Montgomery County, was held to 7 points.
Georgetown Prep 71, St. Albans 68
Senior Michael Boland scored 16 points and JT Strickland added 14 to lead the Little Hoyas (13-12).
Covenant Life 63, Edmund Burke 34
Daniel Ferry scored 14 points to lead Covenant Life to its 20th victory of the season. The Gaithersburg school improved to 20-4 and is preparing to defend their Potomac Valley Athletic Conference championship next week.
