The Middletown High School wrestling team advanced to the finals in the 2A/1A West Region Dual Meet Championships for the first time in program history on Thursday, but it was unable to overcome top-seeded host Winters Mill, falling 38-28.

The Knights (14-2) fell behind early against the defending state champion Falcons, dropping three of the first four matches to dig themselves a 14-3 hole. Then, Dylan Herman (170 pounds) earned a 16-6 major decision against Ryan Barron, Jud Ziegler (182) pinned Allen Corbin in 4 minutes, 19 seconds, and Andrew Cross (195) pinned Ryan Hightower in 2:51 to give second-seeded Middletown a 19-14 advantage through seven matches.

“I think it is cool coming here to regional duals because you get to see some really good teams,” Ziegler said. “[Corbin] was just tough, and he had a really great base. It felt good [to get the pin], and this is a good warm-up for counties and the regional individual meet.”

Winters Mill (16-1) responded by winning the next four matches to build a 35-19 cushion by earning two pins, a technical fall and a major decision.

With just three weight classes left and a 16-point deficit, the Knights needed a decisive win at 120 pounds. Hayden Roberts provided it, pinning Joel Goode in 1:04 to keep Middletown’s hopes alive.

Tucker Ziegler was 7-3 winner against Winter’s Mill’s Jimmy Guercio in the next match, but Middletown needed at least a technical fall to stay alive.

"I told them what I have been telling them all year, work hard, give the effort, wrestle your best and go six minutes, and we did that,” said Middletown coach Jim Schartner. “With two matches to go, we had a shot at beating them and that is really all that you can ask for.”

The Knights defeated No. 3 Mountain Ridge in the semifinals by a 37-27 score. Matt Capabianco (138), Greg Cox (113), Jud Ziegler and Herman each pinned their Mountain Ridge opponents, while Zeke Windon (160), Andrew Clearwood (132) and Vinnie Wilks (145) all posted victories by decision.

“I thought when we came out in the first match we looked a little slow,” Jud Ziegler said. “We didn't do what we wanted to and control all of the matches, so that was sort of a wake-up call for the next match.

“I thought we wrestled well [against Winters Mill], but we didn't get the pins that we needed. They are a good team, but I do think that we wrestled well.”

The Falcons easily dispatched fourth-seeded Catoctin in their semifinal, earning pinfall victories in seven of the first 11 matches to build an insurmountable 54-3 lead. Winters Mill forfeited the last three weight classes to the Cougars (11-4) in order to rest a few participants, but still posted a 54-21 victory.
