Clinton Christian guard Terrence Jackson scored 16 points during a 88-43 loss to Riverdale Baptist on Jan. 17. After the game, a college scout told Clinton Christian coach Dwayne Johnson he liked Jackson’s game and would keep an eye on him.
The plan was working.
Playing a more difficult schedule this season, in part to draw more college attention to Jackson, Clinton Christian has gone just 8-12, including 1-7 in non-conference games. But Jackson, who’s scoring 21.9 points per game, is standing out.
Two games after the Riverdale loss, Jackson scored 27 points against Capital City International to reach 1,000 points for his tenure.
“What it means to me is that I’ve got an athlete who’s put all his passion and energy into the game that he loves, and he worked on his craft to be one of the best, I think, in the county,” Johnson said.
“The kid can shoot. … He can score off the dribble. He can score standing, shooting. Right now, he’s just an all-around player. His basketball I.Q. is probably one of the best of any player I ever coached.”
For his 1,000th point, Jackson received the game ball and a plaque. After the game, he cut down the net to keep.
Jackson averaged 10 points per game as a sophomore and 11 points per game as a junior, so he was surprised to learn a few weeks ago that 1,000 points were within reach. Now that he’s achieved the honor, he hopes college coaches notice.
“Hopefully,” Jackson said. “But I know that to play college basketball is about more than just scoring.”
Milestone in Laurel: St. Vincent Pallotti’s Tiffany Padgett not only eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her high school tenure this past Friday but helped the Panthers climb within a half game of second place in the rugged IAAM A Conference through its 34-29 win against Archbishop Spalding (15-7, 10-3 IAAM A).
Padgett, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the victory, now has 1,014 points for her career while Pallotti moved to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the IAAM A, placing it just below the Cavaliers for second place behind league-leader McDonogh (21-1, 14-0), which was to face the Panthers Wednesday.
All-star bound: DeMatha senior Jerami Grant was selected for the 11th-annual Jordan Brand Classic, which will be played April 14 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte and televised live on ESPN.
Grant, a Syracuse signee, was the only Maryland player selected. He’s averaging 12.4 points per game.
Dribbles: Bladensburg girls basketball coach Lester Butler was looking to capture the 300th win of his career Tuesday when his Mustangs took on Oxon Hill. Butler has been at the school for more than 25 years. He captured a state title in 1993.
Bladensburg entered the week with seven wins; a far cry from the team’s combined 1-38 record the past two seasons. ...
Talk about controlling the boards — Parkdale girls yanked down 71 rebounds in a 54-33 win against DuVal last week. Alan Artis led the way with 16 rebounds followed by Nicole Griggs (14), Shana Donahue (13), Candace Washington (12) and Kareem Conteh (9). ...
Since defeating H.D. Woodson (D.C.), 77-76, on Jan. 7, Riverdale Baptist’s girls team pounded its next 10 opponents by an average of 46.9 points per game to highlight what has been a 14-game win streak dating back to late December.
The Charles H. Flowers girls found the going easy last week as well, besting Northwestern, 91-9, and High Point, 61-19.
