Laurel wins first wrestling title

For the first time in the history of the Southern Maryland Junior Wrestling League, the Laurel Boys and Girls Club has won a dual meet championship.

Laurel won preliminary round matches against Calvert (80-60) and Glenarden (76-71) and then earned a 73-69 victory against La Plata in the championship match.

J.J. Pilai, Manuel Montout, Anthony Harris, Phillip Bourque, Derrick Moody and Khaliyl Abdul-Malik all earned three victories in the championships. Myles Harrington, Tyrell McKenna, Jordan Harris, Dawood Abdul-Malik, Jaylen Daniels, Steven White, Daniel Simpson and Michael Sercy each had two wins. William Levy and Yanni Abdul-Malik had third-place finishes. The team is coached by Steve Overton.

St. Mary of the Mills basketball roundup

The St. Mary of the Mills Rookie Team 3 boys basketball team was a 24-8 winner against St. Bernadette Team 2 on Saturday. Kristopher Tynes, Jalen Abott, T.J. Onwuanibe and Chibby Obiadi scored for the Stallions. Ian Fabregas, Dylan Dossou and Emmerson Moore led the defense.

The JV boys team lost 31-11 to St. Columbo. Conor Justice had four points, Jason Meyer had three, Sal Paratore had two and Louis Lyles and Jared Rogers each had one. Michael Caldwell and Kenny LePore led the defense.

The girls high school team lost 26-18 to St. Jude. Megan Waller had four points, Chrissy Alessandrini had four, Gabby Castro had three and Caroline Goyne, Michelle Rogers and Peggy Stevick each had two. Alessandra Paratore and Emily Barbour played well defensively.

The Rookie girls team was a 13-0 winner against Holy Family. Isabelle Justice had six points, Danielle Collman added five and Maggie Dressman had two.

U-10 girls team wins

The Maryland City U-10 girls basketball team was a 17-8 winner against Chesapeake Academy. Jazmine Washington had six points, six rebounds and six steals. Jaila Canzater had eight points, five rebounds and two steals. Tyler Jade Chandler had two points, and Jasmine Cheek had one point.

Greater Laurel United Soccer roundup

The Greater Laurel United Soccer Club high school boys soccer team was a 6-2 winner against the MRS Dragons, led by Christopher Durnbaugh and John Krueger.

The U-14 boys team lost 8-2 bo the SAC Orange, with goals from Liam Greaves and Spence McPherson.

Sportsplex takes third

The Landover-based Sportsplex Gymnastics Level 6 girls team took third place last weekend at the Manhattan Classic in New York City. Destiny Colon and Navah Marierose had second-place finishes in the all-around competition. Tyla Evans took second on the floor exercise. Trinity Brown was fourth on the vault. Azariah Reid was sixth on the uneven bars.

South Bowie U-10 team wins pair

The South Bowie Boys and Girls Club U-10 AA Team 1 basketball team won its last two games, 9-8 winner Camp Springs and 31-22 against New Carrollton.

Against Camp Springs, Evan Darden had six points, eight rebounds and five steals. Spencer Marks had two points, and Chance Williams had one point — the game-winning free throw with 30 seconds to play. Paul Thomas had eight rebounds. Zorial Bridges and Robert Gregory also had rebounds.

Against New Carrollton, Marks had a season high of 12 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Darden (11 points) and Kyle Estep (seven points) also had season highs. Jaylen King had a point and nine rebounds. Kent Edwards had five steals, and Chance Williams had two rebounds.
