The Bowie State University men's basketball team used a hot shooting performance to rout Chowan College, 91-68, on Tuesday night at A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 21 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division II poll, improved to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Bowie State shot a blistering 58 percent from the floor in the first half and 54 percent for the game. The Bulldogs 34 field goals were a season high.

Bishop McNamara High School graduate Jay Gavin hit four of Bowie State's 10 3-pointers and led the team with 17 points. Center Travis Hyman had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Riverdale Baptist grad Bryan Wilson had 13 points and Dameatric Scott added 11 points.

Bowie State led 47-24 at halftime before the teams played an even second half (44 points each).

The Bowie State women's basketball team improved to 5-14 overall and 5-7 in the CIAA with a 63-51 win against Chowan on Tuesday. The Bulldogs built a 34-23 halftime lead and outscored Chowan by one in the second half. Brooke Miles connected on three 3-pointers and led Bowie State with 18 points. Juliette Turner added 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Chanet Wallace had 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs led 24-20 with 4 minutes, 30 seconds to play in the first half, but expanded their lead to 11 points on a 3-pointer by Miles, a layup by Turner and a jumper by Wallace. Bowie State led by as many as 18 in the second half, and never let Chowan get any closer than six points.

Both Bowie State teams return to action with home games Thursday against Elizabeth City State University. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30.
