Linganore High School captured the boys team title in the 3A West Region Indoor Track and Field Championships, and numerous Frederick County athletes qualified for the Maryland Indoor Championships with their performances Wednesday at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
The Lancers posted a team total of 93 points, while Gov. Thomas Johnson finished second in the boys standings with 74.5 points. Tuscarora (59.5 points) and Urbana (51) earned third and fourth place.
“I was very worried about Thomas Johnson, because they are very strong in the pole vault and very strong in the shot [put],” said Linganore coach Alvin Pridgeon. “All the kids had [personal records] all around. All three relay teams [qualified for the state meet], which is going to be crucial at states to help us out with some points.”
The Maryland 3A Championships will be held Feb. 21 in Landover.
Linganore posted a top-four finish in nine of 13 events, as Julian Coiner won the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), and Braden Bruning (9 minutes, 38.65 seconds) and Patrick Duboyce (9:48.22) were first and third, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run.
“Me and Braden going one and three in this event gives us a lot of good points,” Duboyce said. “I was a little tired and I would have liked to do better. I qualified for states in both [the 1,600 and 3,200], so that is really all I was looking for.”
The Lancers finished last season as the runner up to Atholton in the 3A state meet, but Pridgeon said the team has what it takes to bring home a state title this year.
“We are trying to get it done this time,” he said. “Winning regionals is one of the first things we wanted to do, but I want to get the monkey off our backs. We haven't won the state meet for indoor since 1995, and if we can pull it off this year, that would be icing on the cake.”
The Patriots were led by Hassan Omar, who won the 1,600 (4:25.55), and finished second in the 3,200 (9:40.31). Joe Kass gave Thomas Johnson a victory in the shot put (49-7.25).
Frederick Ugast helped Urbana establish itself in the middle distances by winning the 800 (2:01.92). He also ran the third leg in the Hawks' 3,200 relay victory, joined by Austin Hayslett, Jeremy Lewis and Eric Villenueve.
On the girls side, Tuscarora finished second in the team standings by a one-point margin. Rachel Watkins (7.22 seconds) and Mary Mowoe (8.78) had first-place finishes for the Titans in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles, respectively, while the relay team of Krystal Clarke, Brie Thompson, Mary Moore and Watkins won the 800 (1:45.31).
Other individual champions from Frederick County included Tamara Overjera of Thomas Johnson in the shot put (38-9.75) and Justine Kalisz of Urbana in the pole vault (9-7).
The Linganore relay team of Laura Hartman, Nicole Ludwig, Amber Spear and Delaney Tregoning won the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:59.62.
