Several Montgomery County high school athletes had an impact at the 3A West Region Indoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
On the boys side, Wylliam Youngnia was Montgomery County's only individual champion, winning the 300-meter dash for Watkins Mill in a time of 36.12 seconds. Youngnia also qualified for the Feb. 21 state championship meet in the 55-meter dash (6.8 seconds), and helped the 1,600 relay team in its third-place finish (3 minutes, 36.48 seconds).
The Wolverines finished seventh in the team standings with 38 points, tops among county programs. The 16-team field also included schools from Frederick and Prince George's counties.
Other state meet qualifiers from Montgomery County included Elijah Thomas of Albert Einstein in the 55 dash (6.73), and the Seneca Valley duo of Darius Lewis in the 55 hurdles (7.93) and Colin Gbolie in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches).
For Damascus, Robert Carroll placed fourth in the pole vault (11-6), Thomas Carlacci finished sixth in the 3,200 (10:09.86), Matt May tied for fourth in the high jump (5-8) and Nate Betts claimed fourth in the shot put (45-10.25).
The Damascus girls finished third in the team standings with 55 points. The Swarmin' Hornets relay teams finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, with times of 4:16.15 and 10:10.29. Both relay squads featured Lakayja Alston and Sarah Smith. Courtney Mason ran on the 3,200 relay team, and finished second individually in the 1,600 (5:35.23).
For Albert Einstein, Anna Ucheomumu qualified for the state meet in the shot put (35-0.25) and the 55 dash (7.49).
Northwood's Mallory Kea took second place in the 55 hurdles (9.12), while Yamundow Sarr finished fourth in the 300 (42.22).
