A man was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly carjacked a Cadillac Escalade from a Walmart parking lot, sparking a police chase that ended with two people being injured, Prince George’s police said.

Around 7:30 a.m. near Branch Avenue in Clinton, a man forced a male driver out of his Escalade and drove off with the vehicle, said Cpl. Henry Tippett, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Tippett said nearby patrol officers spotted the vehicle, and after a roughly two-mile high-speed chase, the suspect crashed the Escalade, striking four other vehicles.

Tippett said two of the drivers whose vehicles were hit by the suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at an area hospital. He said the suspect was not injured.

After the crash, the suspect ran off and police dispatched a K-9 unit. The suspect was found hiding inside a storm drain near Old Branch Avenue and Shannon Drive.

The handgun used in the carjacking was found in the Escalade, where the suspect left it before fleeing, Tippett said.

Tippett said the suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and carjacking charges are pending.

“It was definitely a great action on part of the patrol officers in that area, spotting vehicle almost instantaneously as he was fleeing parking lot,” Tippett said. “[The arrest] was a great closure to the case.”
