One woman was killed and four other people were injured after a five-car crash during Monday evening rush hour in Fort Washington.
Prince George’s police say Towanda Woodard, 39, of Alexandria, Va., was driving her Honda Accord south on Oxon Hill Road around 5:30 p.m. when she was struck by a speeding driver in a GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle that crossed into the southbound lanes when traveling north at the intersection of Oxon Hill Road and Cedar Ridge Drive.
County police spokesman Cpl. Larry Johnson said when the male driver of the Yukon crossed into the southbound lanes, he struck two oncoming vehicles and went airborne before crashing into Woodard’s vehicle and another vehicle.
“[The Yukon] came down on top of the Honda, and the driver was killed,” said Johnson. “The Honda was pushed back off of the road and came to a rest on a utility pole.”
Apart from Woodard, who was pronounced dead at the scene, four other drivers in the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Yukon was transported to area hospital where he was treated. Johnson said there are currently no charges against the driver.
“As the driver of the Yukon approached the intersection, for reasons unknown, he crossed over the double yellow lines into the south lane of Oxon Hill Road,” Johnson said, who said investigators believe speed was a factor.
Other factors in the incident are still being investigated.
Calls to Woodard’s residence were not returned Tuesday.
