Police have identified and charged a third man in the September killing of Alexandria, Va., community activist Lenwood “Lenny” Harris, whose body was found in a 20-foot well Jan. 26 in Fort Washington.

Tyrone Lewis, 26, of Fort Washington, is believed to be the last suspect in the homicide that began as a missing person investigation Sept. 22, said Maj. Michael Straughan, Prince George’s County Police homicide commander, during a Monday news conference.

Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a county police spokesman, said Lewis was already in police custody in Fairfax County, Va., for unrelated charges when authorities identified him as a suspect in the Harris investigation.

Lewis has been held in Alexandria since October for larceny charges unrelated to Harris’ death.

“He is awaiting extradition pending what he has to deal with in Fairfax, and once released from there we have a detainer on him,” said Rodriguez.

Lewis is charged with murder, assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.

Police found Harris’ body Jan. 26 after receiving an anonymous tip about a body in a well on a vacant property in the 11900 block of Old Fort Road. It took nearly two days to excavate the well and remove Harris’ remains.

During a previous news conference, PGPD Chief Marc Magaw said Harris’ body had been in the well for a “substantial amount of time,” and Harris was believed to be shot and killed shortly after his disappearance Sept. 21 and dumped into the well shortly after.

Previously, Ivan Newman, 20, of Waldorf was arrested Thursday morning in Charles County and is being charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Newman is being held in the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro without bond, and faces a preliminary hearing March 1 in Prince George’s County District Court. He did not have an attorney listed Monday with the court.

The first suspect arrested in the killing was Oxon Hill resident Linwood Johnson, 49, whose arrest was announced Tuesday.

Johnson is being held in the Department of Corrections without bond, and has a preliminary hearing Feb. 28 in Prince George’s County District Court. He did not have an attorney listed Monday with the court.

“We believe all three involved were the only people involved,” Rodriguez said, noting that the homicide investigation is now closed.

Police haven’t confirmed how the three suspects knew each other.

A funeral for Harris was held earlier Monday morning at the Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church in Washington, D.C.

A reflections ceremony for Harris was held Monday morning at the Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church in Washington, D.C., where Harris was a member.

Carol Owens Ford, the church’s senior executive assistant, said the church was filled to capacity as about 2,000 community members attended the ceremony to honor Harris.

“He was a great member of the church, loving, kind, respectful,” she said. “He worked very well with our youth in Alexandria. ... He dedicated life to helping others excel.”

Harris founded Operation H.O.P.E., an Alexandria-based nonprofit for mentoring youth and providing services to underserved residents. He was also a sponsor of One Love Festival, an annual community event in Alexandria held to promote unity and love for one another.
