An Arlington, Va., man was killed after he stepped in front of an oncoming dump truck Wednesday evening on Central Avenue in Capitol Heights, according to Prince George's police.
At about 5:16 p.m., the truck’s driver was traveling on Central Avenue toward Washington, D.C., and approaching Daimler Drive when 43-year-old Reginald Dwayne Jefferson, of the 2500 block of S. Arlington Mill Road, stepped off the curb and stood in the truck's path, said Cpl. Henry Tippett, a county police spokesman.
"Several witnesses observed him deliberately step in front of this truck," Tippett said, adding that Jefferson's death is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Jefferson, who was identified by his fingerprints, was taken to a hospital where he later died, policesaid.
Police had no additional description of the driver, who stayed at the scene. He did not know where the truck was headed and if it is owned by a specific company.
There were no charges pending against the driver as of Saturday, Tippett said.
"The driver certainly made every effort to stop, to not hit the man," he said.
