A 68-year-old Silver Spring man has been charged with killing his wife Saturday, after he apparently tried to kill both himself and her in 2010, according to police and court records.

Henry Gordon Hutchins of the 11400 block of July Drive was charged Sunday with first-degree murder for the Saturday killing of Carol Frances Carter, 62, of the same address, according to Montgomery County police.

Hutchins called police at around 2:49 p.m. Saturday to say his wife was dead, police said. Carter was found dead in her bedroom with injuries to her upper body.

Hutchins was kept in police custody on suspicion of murder, as he was the only other person believed to have been in the apartment around the time Carter died, said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks said.

The state medical examiner’s office in Baltimore has yet to determine the cause or manner of Carter’s death, Starks said.

Starks said that Hutchins identified Carter as his wife, but Starks could not confirm their relationship.

According to online court records, a man with the same name and address as Hutchins was charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder in Anne Arundel County in 2010. These charges were later dropped, according to court records.

An August 2010 report by The Washington Post said Hutchins drove his Jeep into a storage area on Jessup Road in Anne Arundel County, where large trash trailers were kept in an attempt to kill himself and Carter, identified as his longtime companion. The pair were both seriously hurt in the crash.

Starks said he could not comment on the 2010 incident.

There were no injuries to Hutchins reported in his Sunday arrest. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

No attorney was listed Sunday for Hutchins in court records. Family members could not be reached for comment.

Montgomery County police ask anyone with information about Carter’s death to call 240-773-5070.
