The Eleanor Roosevelt and Laurel high school swim teams had a rare weeknight meet Jan. 19, which allowed the Raiders and Spartans to compete in a week when most other Prince George’s County teams did not.

A full slate of public school meets scheduled for Saturday were postponed to Jan. 31 because of inclement weather, and a Saturday matchup of three of the area’s top private school teams — DeMatha, Georgetown Prep and Gonzaga — was canceled.

Roosevelt’s boys (8-0) kept their perfect record intact with a 111-62 victory over Laurel, while the Roosevelt girls (8-0) remained unbeaten with a 121-52 victory against the Spartans. Both Roosevelt teams are defending their county championship titles. The Raiders will face longtime rival Bowie on Feb. 4, one week before the county meet.

The Roosevelt boys started the meet against Laurel with freshman Michael Stevens, juniors Dennis Witol and Daniel Chavez and senior Lee Friedman winning the 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 49.44 seconds). Witol, Chavez and Friedman Gazette-Star All-County First Team selections last winter, and Stevens has emerged as the best male freshman in the public school ranks this season. That same foursome also combined to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.94).

Chavez and Witol finished first and second in 200 individual medley. Friedman won the 50 freestyle (23.66) and the 100 freestyle (50.72). Chavez won the 500 freestyle (5:13.01) by nearly two minutes over teammate Kevin Plum. Stevens won the 100 butterfly (59.03) and the 100 backstroke (59.93). Laurel junior Ryan Pauling won the 100 breaststroke.

The Roosevelt girls team delivered an equal display of dominance. Senior Courtney Like-Mathews, sophomore Jennifer Clune and juniors Cecilia Lapp-Stoltzfus and Emily Boluda won the 200 medley relay (2:03.46). Clune, Charlotte Francouer and juniors Kaitlin Bielec and Natasha Chomko won the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.53). Boluda, Lapp-Stoltzfus, Like-Mathews and Chomko capped the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.27) by nearly 30 seconds.

In the individual events, Chomko was nearly six seconds better than Boluda to win the 200 freestyle, and Like-Mathews finished 13.5 seconds ahead of Lapp-Stoltzfus in the 200 IM. Chomko bested Bielec by almost three seconds in the 50 free, and Clune was six seconds faster than Bielec in the 100 freestyle. Boluda won the 500 freestyle (5:47.85) by more than 40 seconds. Like-Mathews took the 100 backstroke (1:07.32) by nearly 10 seconds. Clune won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.49) by more than three seconds. Laurel senior Jade Hill won the 100 butterfly and took third in the 100 breaststroke.

“I thought we did really well,” Laurel coach John Venit said. “Our boys are peaking now. They blew that first meet against Flowers by not swimming to their abilities. We’ll do fine. We’re having a good season.”

DeMatha (8-1) has its last scheduled dual meet tonight against Bishop O’Connell, but the Stags likely will be unable to make up the double dual against Georgetown Prep and Gonzaga. While DeMatha is not sending any swimmers to the National Catholic Championship meet this weekend at Villanova University in Philadelphia, Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep will participate in that event.

There is a prep meet for the Washington Metropolitan Swimming & Diving Championships (Metros) on Feb. 4, followed by the Metros meet on Feb. 11, leaving little time in between for a makeup date.

“I know we’ve swam against Gonzaga every year since I’ve been the coach,” said DeMatha coach Tom Krawczewicz, in his 20th season. “It will be strange not to see them in a dual meet, but I know we’ll see them at Metros. We could possibly have a meet after Metros, but by then I think all of the top swimmers will be raced out. Everyone is trying to peak for these upcoming next three weekends, so having a dual meet after Metros probably is not going to happen.”
