Three families remained displaced Tuesday after a fire at their Silver Spring townhouse complex.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived at the home, 2037 Lyttonsville Road, in the Woodside Mews neighborhood in Silver Spring around 7:30 p.m. Sunday to find the house engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were unable to attack the blaze from inside the house because of extensive structural damage and the volume of fire, officials said. The flames were extinguished after a little more than an hour.

The fire, which started in a middle unit, also caused moderate damage to adjoining units on each side.

The Red Cross was helping the three families find shelter.

The cause and origin of the fire had not been determined by fire investigators by Tuesday afternoon, said Capt. Oscar Garcia, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman.
