Prince George’s police have identified a female suspect who allegedly robbed an 84-year-old woman in Langley Park and are now seeking her whereabouts.
Linda McCorkle, 48, of the 1500 block of Chillum Road in Chillum, is facing charges for armed robbery and second-degree assault, police said.
The suspect allegedly approached the elderly victim in the 6500 block of New Hampshire Avenue with three small children around 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and said she needed money to care for her children. Police say the victim agreed to drive the suspect to the Bank of America in the 7900 block of New Hampshire Avenue upon which a second female suspect approached and took custody of the children.
Police say the suspect then implied she had a gun and would shoot the victim if she did not withdraw a large sum of money from her account. The victim withdrew an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspect ordered the victim to drive back to the 6500 block of New Hampshire Avenue where the suspect left on foot.
County police spokesman Cpl. Evan Baxter said the incident, including the second woman and the children’s involvement and identity, is still under investigation.
He said police received an anonymous tip Thursday after getting information out to the public and were able to verify the tip through video surveillance footage provided by the Bank of American in Langley Park.
“Any time the more vulnerable members of community are preyed upon, it’s taken with certain level of concern,” Baxter said.
Baxter said it is safer for residents to give to organizations rather than unknown individuals.
“If you want to be generous, if you want to give and contribute, find ways to give and contribute to reputable sources rather than directly to people,” he said. “That way you can avoid scams.”
Bank of America branch representatives could not be reached for comment as of Friday morning.
Calls to McCorkle’s residence were not returned by Friday morning.
