Second-grade students at five Frederick County public schools are exchanging Tweets with one of Frederick City’s historic iron dog statues.
The Tweets from GUESStheDog’s Twitter account are read by their teachers each Tuesday. The account was established by the Historical Society of Frederick County.
According to an email from the historical society, the partnership’s purpose is to enrich student exploration of local history. GUESStheDog, a statue on West Church Street, asks history questions and responds to questions that teachers send in from Carroll Manor, Emmitsburg, Lewistown, Urbana and Waverley elementary schools.
For example, when asked what kind of dog Guess is, the answer, “greyhound,” included a Wikipedia link about that breed of dogs. When asked about Guess’s friends, the Tweeted response was, “I do have lots of friends! One of them is Charity, who lives on Market Street.”
Charity is another historic dog statue in downtown Frederick at the Federated Charities building. A link was provided to that Web site for classes wishing to do further research.
