Poolesville High School wrestler Robert Winning admitted that he and his teammates were looking forward to Wednesday's dual meet against Bethesda-Chevy Chase.

The Falcons knew that the visiting Barons and their up-and-coming program had the capability of giving them a stout test, and after the first three bouts, the Barons held a 10-6 lead. Winning, who carries a 19-1 record as a senior, helped to swing the momentum to his team, pinning Alex Matteson 24 seconds into the second period, to give his team the lead at 12-10. From there, the Falcons soared to a 39-23 victory over B-CC, improving their overall dual match record to 6-1.

"I would say I did pretty well [tonight]," Winning said. "[I was] maybe a bit sloppy, but I just need to make some little tweaks. I just try to go out each match and try not to underestimate anybody. Because you never know who's going to be coming after you. And any given day, somebody can be beaten."

Winning's only setback came in the finals of the Damascus Holiday Tournament, where he was edged by Williamsport's Zach Shoemaker, 4-3, breaking a previous 17-match winning streak. Having applied to and received a congressional recommendation for the Naval Academy, Winning plans to walk-on the wrestling team for the Midshipmen if he is accepted. If not, he is also looking to compete at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.), Washington & Lee (Va.), or wrestle at the varsity or club level should he select to attend a big school such as the University of Maryland, College Park or Virginia Tech.

On Wednesday, Winning was one of four Falcons to register pins. Sam Dodds recorded a fall in 3:03 over Jamal Hill in what was a closely contested match early on. Cesar Roque pounced on B-CC's Bradley Goodman at 285 and ended his bout in 23 seconds, and 120-pounder Justin Hansen took care of Jake Baldwin in 1:24.

Poolesville took the lead out of the gate, as David Frendlich edged Rahim Leys, 3-2. Leys took the place of B-CC sophomore Justin Elwell, who barely missed weight, and was not able to put his 18-3 record to the test.

"That killed us, that definitely killed us," said Barons coach Nick Arone, whose team fell to 4-3. "Last year he made the state tournament and was one match from placing. He's a kid that has knowledge of the sport, he's been around forever. He's a smart wrestler and he knows what you have to do to win, but you have to be able to make weight. That was definitely a big disappointment for us [tonight]."

B-CC junior 138-pounder Charlie Banaszak upped his overall record to 22-1 with a 20-5 technical fall victory over Cody Dorsey, his seventh straight win.

"I felt like we weren't wrestling as well as we could have, in a lot of situations we were beating ourselves. We knew what to do, but we just weren't doing it," said Banaszak, whose lone loss this season is to Alfred Bannister of Bishop McNamara at the Battlin' Barons Tourney.

Banaszak's coach agreed.

"I feel like we beat ourselves and we didn't wrestle that well," Arone said. "Overall, there were a couple of matches that we made too many mental mistakes, and they capitalized. I think that's a combination of us making mistakes, and them being well-coached. So they knew when to capitalize when we were in bad positions, they made us pay. You wrestle a team like this, and you are not going to win matches that way."

Poolesville coach Kevin Dorsey gave the Barons kudos for the direction their program seems to be headed.

"I've watched those guys before, and we've watched them grow, and [oh my goodness] man, they were down one good guy. But they are really growing."

Dorsey gave credit to his team's fast start to his wrestlers, who since an opening match loss to Walt Whitman, have won six straight duals.

"I have to put it all on the kids. I can't take the credit. I holler at them and run them through practice and do what coaches always do in wrestling since the beginning of time. But since I have good guys from the top to the bottom this year. I want them to come together as a team, as one big bundle. There were some bumps in the road, and we've had to re-direct them. But I like where we're headed."

Alex Gama earned a tech fall (17-0) for B-CC at 145 over Che Cabellero, and Banaszak's younger brother, freshman 106-pounder Jack Banaszak, earned a 13-3 win over Luke Maher.
